how kinesiology helps and improves striking and grappling

Updated: Mar 20

kinesiology stands for learning of how a human body moves in order to prevent injuries in training, and why is it important?

  1. youll be able to know how to do the movement correctly and prevent injury

  2. youll be able to know which exircises you need exactly in order to strenghten the muscles in your body,

  3. youll be able to know where the power of striking or control in jiu-jitsu movement comes from, for example, how do you know where the power of cross comes from? right you gotta turn all your body in order to make the movement the right way, but where is the power comes from ,and what do you need to do in order for your punch to be effective?

so if you see in boxing all the shadow boxing movement ,angle shuffle, and all the head movement thats the best term to define human movement, i can promise you that 95% of fighters dosent know nothing of how body moves, if they would know and be conscious then they would be better fighters and be able to know how body moves, and how to defend and what to do, same thing in jiu-jitsu, is the awareness of the movement, imagine the double leg takedown, where is the power comes from? from lifting the oponnent or just turning him to the other way? good question right? good so lets get started.

first i wanna start and describe the 3 planes of motion

1.sagittal plane motion: It divides the body into a left section and a right section. A specific sagittal plane is the median sagittal plane – which passes down the midline of the body, separating it into equal halves. and you have two types of movements with that.

1.etension and flexion:a blending movement where the relative angle between two adjacent segments decreases.

2.frontal plane movement: its a side to side exircise and can divide the body to front and back exircise too like jumping jax for example: which called abduction and adduction:

3.horizontal plane movement:

divides the body into upper (superior) and lower (inferior) halves. Movements that occur in this plane involve rotation or horizontal movement, which include external and internal.

so those are basic knowledge to know of how the body moves during exircise, i recommend you when you going to the gym just try to watch people training and ask yourself, why are they moving that way? and also when you exircise be aware of yourself , the way you move, even though when you walking be aware of that, once you will make your brain be concious of everything you doing then youll start to understand the anatomy of your body better.

right now i wanna talk about the skeletal anatomy , from the ankle foot to the core and where the power of the punch comes from.

lets start with the ankle foot:

the medial malleolus of the tibia and the lateral malleolus of the tibia enables two important movements which is

plantar flexion:is which the foot pointed downwards

dorsiflexion: in which the foot is raised

what happens is when you dont have proper dorsiflexion youll get an outward rotation movement which called inversion and eversion those two movements below the ankle joint underneath the talus. the combination of inversion and eversion is plantarflexion and doesiflexion what gives you pronation and supination of the ankle foot complex , now pronation is dorsiflexion and eversion and supination is plantarflexion and inversion, but why do we care? pronation and supination are very natural movements that happen once you take a step, however if you over pronate which puts stress on the joint its rotate the tibia and can put stress on the knee and even on the hip, or if you over supinate the exact opposite happens, what happens down below affects right away whats above it which is the knee.

the knee complex the largest synovial joint in the body and has the most complicated structure

the knee joint is essentially a hinge joint capable of flexion and extension and has the Ligamentous support: LCL,ACL,PCL,MCL. ACL and MCL making the knee to move flexion and extension ,but too much stress on the knee from the ankle joint can cause injury, thats why its very important to warm up before you do any cardio, either its jumping rope, running, and any other MMA exircises or drills. when you doing shadow boxing you gotta be aware the way your ankles move and how fast they are it will develop your footwork to move better , its good to go to chiropractors sometimes ,even though they expensive, but if you training 3-4 times a week very hard and sparring all the time, you better go, beacause once your muscles and bones start to grow it can cause injury without you doing anything, the muscles too has to have the right Quality and Quantity of training, they should rest and be treated.

now lets talk about the hip movement and how everything comes

to the hips from the knee , its called: the Lumbo-pelvic hip complex

so in the first picture as you see we got the pelvis

and then we got the sacroiliac joint and pelvic tilt

the anterior pelvic tilt: created by lumbar extension and hip flexion.

posterior pelvic tilt: created by lumbar flexion and hip extension.

so why is this important to know all of this this?

so we will find out is the muscles that control the hip joint if they tight of the one side and the other thats automatically gonna affect the pelvis which automatically affects the low back

the hip is the most mobile joint in the lower extremity

the hip joint is a ball and socket synovial joint

so with the hip you have flexion and extension, adduction and abduction, and external and internal.

lets talk right now about the spinal cord

the spinal motions:

1.flexion

2.extension.

3.lateral flexion

4.rotation

5.pelvic titling

-anterior

-posterior.

so lets see how its all connects to the intervertebral disc:

the intervertebral disc:

two main parts:

  1. annulus

  2. nucleus both of them can take tons tons of pressure but it can take too a lots a lots of force over and over and allowes to flexed and extend and rotate they distribute the force and the shock, every time you take a a step. you run , you jump

  1. link two adjacent vertebraw

  2. distirbute force and shock

  3. bigger and thicker in lumbar area the lumbar area has to be act as a shock observer before enything above it

  4. movement affects position of nucleus. so if you put stress on it it can take it but if you put too much stress over too much period of time then its gonna affect the altering and eventually you kinda pushing the nucleus back

  5. recieves nutrition by imbibition { the absorption of liquid via pressure application and release}

  6. most vulnerable in the flexed position.

now furthermore if we wanna develop a good force then the force is gonna be for example if i wanna throw a punch i need that energy that force coming through the ground from the ankle coming to the hips and then to the core and throw my shoulder, so thats where the power comes from , it comes from the bottom to the top

kinda like this:

now if i wanna have a good power there i gotta have good force ditribution through my core and if dont have a solid core and a strong core then those forces will be dissipated in the wrong direction, because i want the force go straight and not to the left and right, so youll be stronger in everything once you understand about the spinal neutral and have a solid core and youll be safer by doing any striking and you wont hurt yourself .

working on footwork and shadow boxing everyday is very important for your movement and it strenghtening your ankles the medial malleolus of the tibia and the lateral malleolus of the tibia of the ankle foot as i said in the beginning, because the force coming from the ankles so you gotta make sure to work first on that, and warm up the ankles everytime you training before and after, the best thing to do is to put weight on the foot and run, i started doing that and my footwork are much better now, but you cannot use it without first doing it without it, if you will put too much force in the beginning you can cause injury even to the knee,.

ill give more exircises and recommendations later after ill finish to speak about the all human anatomy.

now i wanna talk about the abdominal muscles and it connects to the core:

1:the transverse abdominis rapps around you like a weight belt what it does it connects all the way thoracic and lumbar spine .thats the only abdominal muscle that ties very well into the vertebrae.

2.: the rectus abdominis: the main function of the rectus abdominis is,move the body between the ribcage and The pelvis.external oblique muscles, these are on the each side of the rectus abdominis.the external oblique muscles allow the trunk to twist, but to the opposite side of whichever external oblique is contracting.

3.external and internal oblique: they both rotate and side bend the trunk .

So basically that's the basic introduction to the kinesiology system and it's very important to know them and learn them and be aware of each movement you doing , i will post later and will talk about another exircises that will help to grow your muscles .

thanks so much for reading hope you guys enjoyed, i would like to hear your opnion in comments below
