Today I really wanna speak today about one of the most important things in ground and pound which people forget about and don't know,is how to not get punched while you on the bottom and always looking for a submission or to catch a leg lock, my coach rene dreifuss developed a different system for combat jiu-jitsu which called the "rat guard", now what so special about it? It's just looks like a giolutine but not really, but in that position you completely protecting your face from getting punched and you safe + from here you'll be able to start with more submissions, you can do an armbar, Kimura, sweeps,omoplata ,buggychoke and so on , in the beginning when I got to radical mma I basically didn't get that and understand why it's so important, but if you doing one technique good for at least 3 times a week then it will work in a real fight, I was sparring a pro fighter and I was on the ground, but once I got the rat guard I was able to sweep him and get to the mount position , the guy was like, what the heck was that, which is crazy for a pro fighter not to know stuff like that, but that's one of the graicie jiu-jitsu technique that I can say still hidden but people don't know about it and don't use it ,and believe me the rat guard works in MMA and ufc fights 100%, the right rat guard works for everyone and on anyone, now let's say you on the ground and you trying to get the armbar submission that most of the people do which is like this:
I can tell you that almost 85-90% percent there is always failures in mma with this armbar,
either it will not work and he can push you and pass the guard ,either you will get slammed or either you will get punched on the face most likely, a lot of BJJ Academies teaching that thing but maybe it would work against a guy who dosent know everything or suck at jiu-jitsu, but believe me against a good fighter you will get your face punched , once I moved to mma from grappling I tried catch this armbar many times and I was getting punched to the face ,not beacause I did it wrong or something like that it just not gonna work against bigger and talented guys , my coach rene dreifuss teaching different style of Armbar from the rat guard, you can go to the youtube and search for : (radical mma rat guard ) and you'll see there all the videos of the rat guard, and don't forget to search for rat guard armbar and you'll see what am I talking about, once you'll see it try it and you'll see the difference, everything I'm writing on this blog is stuff that I experienced and I keep on learning about martial arts and keep sharing it , nothing on my posts is made up or the information is copied from someone , unfortunately I don't have yet videos of myself of the rat guard but watching my coach explaining it's the best thing, maybe you saw him on youtube on the channel called: how cast or just ignored that ,this time really try this move that looks so simple but effective, because the whole idea is not getting punch and win the fight by submission or by finding a way to be on top ,basically finding the way to the offense not just the defense, there is no defense by being on the ground and trying to catch triangles non stop isn't sport jiu-jitsu, the whole idea is find a way to win the fight or get on top again and with this technique for sure you'll be able to do it, once you see the videos grab your partner in your gym or somewhere and just try to practice the rat guard basics , in mma the main idea is to find a way to get on top when you in situations like :side-control ,mount, guard , why? Beacause obviously most of the mma fighters know rear naked choke, double leg, armbar, triangle and so on , but be an expert at side control or mount escape is already different, people not thinking about the real defense sometimes that's why they can't find the offense and you get lost and tierd , the whole jiu-jitsu idea was created for us to be able to fight bigger opponents and not losing too much energy, if you finding yourself in sparring losing too much energy even after 10 minutes of sparring nonstop then isn't a sport jiu-jitsu, you doing it wrong or someone teaching you wrong, also by trying to lift bigger guys in double leg isnt a good idea ,you just breaking your back and isn't going to make a better wrestler by trying to lift someone twice size as you,that's why you have something that called a technique which you have to learn.
